Logitech Review Update

Well the Harmony remote supplied by Logitech as a part of their Australia testing program is now set up and I have been using it for the past few days. They have been busy days so the use has not been heavy.

The set up was smooth and simple, the only device that I could not get connected was a cheep media player I got from eBay that plays files off a usb or flash card. I was not surprised. I will try to get it to learn the settings at some point.

It is frustrating that it does not turn on the T-Box but that is not a show stopper. It worked well in connecting to my Macbook pro, so I can pause, play and switch tracks. I was very impressed that it operated a cheap (eBay) AV switch on our lounge setup and the old CRT TV in that room also.

The remote works well, I have had an occasion where the kids have used the normal remotes and it is out of sync, this means you just need to get it back in sync.

One aspect to get used to is waiting for it to complete all of its commands once you press the button, this is really just about retraining the brain and you tend to be quicker at pressing the buttons individually on the ordinary remotes, but once I get used to this I am sure it will not be noticeable.

I find that it is not easy to use the remote one handed, trying to hit the '9' button to flick to channel 9 is awkward. When holding it in my hand whilst watching TV I find that I am nervous about hitting a button.

I have not got my wife to use it yet, she has barely sat down long enough so I will try to get her to have a play. She is a bit of a technophobe so I am not surprised. My daughter (10) picked it up and was able to get a DVD going the other day so that is a good sign that is is intuitive.

All in all to this point it is very functional and does save having lots of remotes cluttering up the rooms.
