There is a lot of discussion about the antics of footballers in the media this week. most of the focus has been on the Saints v Cats game from this last week of AFL. Many are saying that Steven Baker did nothing wrong and has been dealt with very harshly, others are saying that the umpires did not do the right thing. Well I beg to differ, the more I thought about it the more frustrated I became. What he got up to is nothing less that bullying and the blame rests with him!
He made no attempt to win by skill and ability, it was not about being a better player, it was about discouraging and hurting his opposition. Now I am all for the brutality of footballers getting a hard ball and putting their bodies on the line but what Baker did in weak and it is this type of thing that we are trying to stamp out from the school playground!
So to the AFL match review panel, well done. I hope it helps the kids to learn that they need to be above this type of behaviour and that it is not acceptable. I hope also that Baker a capable footballer can come back and win by skill and ability and not because he is a skilled bully!
