My nephew posted this idea on his blog from the Book Good to Great.
THE FLYWHEEL
Each company started slow (crawling) then built momentum (walking) and then when breakthrough to greatness came they moved quickly (running).
This idea has always been the way I like to go through things. The metaphor gave me the language that I needed. The idea of a flywheel, works. The idea of winding up, of momentum building. If we are going to build strength then we need to build it well, we need to build it deliberately with time for it to grow.
The concept of using the honeymoon period, milking the early days in a role to make the changes that are needed, to go hard at it does not sit well with me. Yes we need to progress, but it must be towards building something that will last, building something that will make a difference in eternity for the lives of people. What is the point of running of the bat only to have to change the whole thing because it is wrong.
With the Tour de France on at the moment we are made well aware of this. The peloton rides with strong and steady pace, building all the time, the breakaways takes off ahead going at significant pace. Mostly they are reeled in, at times they win the stage and have the glory of crossing the winning line first. However, this is fleeting, they are not the leaders overall! The leaders sit in the peloton making sure they consistently finish well and strong and in the end as they ride up the Champs-Élysées they are the winner.
It is funny isn't it that we teach kids the idea of the hare and the tortoise,we teach them to go steady and strong and then in life we applaud those who live out front like hares!
So I encourage you to live life, work and play to end a winner, to go the distance!
