Scripture Reading 4:1-13
So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.
Observation
Previously Paul as written to the Corinthian Christians about their quarrals as to who is the greatest and who they should follow. He has spoken to them about Christ being the centre of all things and the very foundation on which they were to build their lives. The Church in Corinth had some big issues, pride was one! In this passage Paul urges them to be humble, not to boast, but to live as servants. This is not a word we use in our world much anymore, we don’t have servants in our homes and not too many people live and work as servants. We have waiters but they are not really servants. Paul though urges that they live as servants of Christ, this is to put Christ and the needs of the gospel above one’s self. This is a big ask and one that was not how the church in Corinth behaved.
Application
In your life who is the servant? Christ or You? This is a big question to ask and one hard to live out, we need to be sure that we are the servant of the gospel and not the other way around.
Prayer
Lord God ruler of all, I humbly confess for the times I have put myself in the position of authority and treated you and your gospel as the servant. May you have complete control over my life and may I be the servant of you. Where you send me I will go, what you ask of me I will do.
