Scripture Reading 7:1-24
For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord's freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ's slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
Observation
The next few chapters of First Corinthians Paul changes track a little. From 7 through 15 Paul is addressing issues that the Corinthian Church has written to him about. This is a great insight into the church in Corinth, they wanted to do the right thing has had sought advice. We would do well to be like this, where we are not sure, ask. This is how we can develop and get better at what we do.
There are many questions asked of Paul, his answers are heavily influenced by his understanding that Christ was about to return immediately! What concerned Paul most however, was not so much the issues of marriage, or slavery but rather who was truly the owner of your life! To the married was Christ the most important? To the un-married, the same question. To the slave you now have freedom in Christ, whilst still serving as a slave, to the free man there was slavery to the greatest master of all, Christ himself.
Application
What place does Christ have in your life? Do other people or activities have a greater place in your life? Do you live like Paul convinced that Christ will return? Do you allow your values to be shaped by this imminent return?
