Oh for a thousand tongues to sing

Scripture Reading 14:26-40

Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.

Observation

Following on from Paul’s call to live lives of love first of all above and beyond exercising the spiritual gifts, he now balances this with a call to follow love but seek gifts. He goes as far as saying seeking them eagerly, Paul even singles out prophecy.

Why this urging and why single out prophecy? Well with the limited space here the simple answer is that we should be longing to hear from God in every way, Scripture most definitely, prayer yes, and directly through prophecy, absolutely. Surely we need to hear from God as much as possible and that is what prophecy is, hearing from God. Paul though clarifies the use of prophecy. Often people want to deliver a message of condemnation, or conviction. This may be the case but Paul here says that prophecy is for strengthening, encouragement and comfort. Here Paul keeps to his theme, of love; prophecy from God comes complete with all his love, grace and compassion.

Application

Take the time to remember when God has spoken into your life? Recall the many ways he has done this. Praise him for speaking and ask for him to speak often into your life.

Prayer

God of all wisdom and knowledge, I praise you for your ongoing love and grace, thank you for speaking deeply into my life, continue to speak more, strengthening me, encouraging me, comforting me, by the power of your spirit.
