From Maggi Dawn...
There is an idea that pastors don’t have the luxury of doing serious study. That is to be left for those living in ivory towers. In the real world we just need to get busy and find out what works. But pragmatism leads to theological error. Pragmatism leads to moral failure. Pragmatism leads to a human agenda.
More than ever, pastors need to be theologians.
Too often we do stuff just because we always did or we just want to change or it is what people want. If we have not invested time into thinking about God and his role and will then we are negligent. I would say however that every one Pastor or lay person needs to be a theologian! We need to spend more time thinking about God and our responses to him!
Maggie also states...
my belief that ministry has to proceed out of good thinking as much as it does from anything else.
can not agree more! Too often I have been told just use this... "why reinvent the wheel!" Well because you learn so much through the inventing process that you don't learn when you just use some program that someone else made. Take time to think!
I think that the other reason it's vitally important for pastors and leaders to "reinvent the wheel" is that theology can only be authentic and realistic if it reflects the context it is being done in. Love the post.
